How To Get Started with the Moment VND QuickLock Filter for iPhone

Moment's best-selling VND QuickLock filter is the most ingenious mobile accessory for iPhone filmmaking. Here's everything you need to know, and how to use it.

In recent times, there has been a considerable rise in Shot on iPhone content, even from skeptics who initially didn’t take mobile filmmaking seriously, until Apple introduced Apple Log with the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max.

Fast forward to 2025, and most creatives, including former skeptics, are embracing the mobile filmmaking scene using the latest iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max… and who wouldn’t? Even Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg shot an entire music video using just an iPhone. That’s the level of buy-in we’re seeing with iPhone content.

The latest iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max models feature, among other things, ProRes 422 HQ Apple Log, 4K at 120FPS, a 48MP f/1.78 main camera with sensor-shift OIS, a 48MP ultra-wide f/2.2, and the new 120mm telephoto camera.

However, despite all the advancements in mobile filmmaking technology that these iPhones bring, they still need a little help to become the ultimate mobile filmmaking tools, and that’s where the Moment VND 2–7 Stop QuickLock Filter comes in.

I’ve created several Shot on iPhone short films and music videos that have gone on to win multiple awards around the world, been featured in various articles, and even led to guest appearances on multiple podcast channels to talk about my work. The “secret sauce” has always been to keep things simple. My go-to setup for all those projects was an iPhone 11, the M-series Moment 1.33x anamorphic lens, and a 67mm 2–5 stop VND filter, mounted on either a Zhiyun Crane 2S or the Zhiyun Smooth 5S.

The key is to keep the rig as light as possible, to stay focused on the storytelling, not the gear, and to keep the filming flow uninterrupted.

The introduction of Moment’s QuickLock Filters has revolutionized creative mobile filmmaking by bringing simplicity, lightweight design, and one of the most crucial elements for cinematic-looking mobile footage: motion blur.

When using third-party apps like the Moment Pro Camera app or the Blackmagic Camera app, you get the freedom to dial in cinematic settings, but one thing you can’t change is the f-stop value, since iPhones have fixed apertures. That’s exactly why the Moment VND 2–7 Stop QuickLock Filter is a must-have for mobile filmmakers who want to keep their rigs minimal while still achieving that cinematic look.

Moment VND 2-7 Stop QuickLock filter

  • Moment’s most loved filter the 67mm VND Filter series, is now in an easy to use compact sized for easy carry.
  • ND4 – ND128 with hard stops, giving you coverage across a wide range of ND strengths.
  • Precision control allowing you to see which stop you shooting from behind the viewfinder.
  • Achieve natural motion blur when keeping to the 180-degree shutter rule, getting the most cinematic footage possible from an iPhone.

The mobile filmmaking accessory industry is booming right now. There isn’t a tool, cage, gimbal, lens, or filter you can’t buy to level up your production value. Filmmakers are spoilt for choice. However, speaking from my experience as a solo filmmaker, the most important thing is this: how do I get from point A to point B seamlessly, with zero disruptions to the story or the limited time I have to shoot my film? The need to carry less gear or accessories with me when I am on a shoot. I prefer to only take with gear that is fit for purpose. This forces solo filmmakers to plan ahead before getting to the location.

How to Install:

Installation is quick and easy. QuickLock Filters are compatible with both iPhone 15 and 16 Pro and Pro Max models when used with a compatible Moment Camera Case (sold separately).

These filters can be mounted onto either the Drop-In Lens Mount or the Bezel Trim Ring for a secure and reliable fit.

To Install:

  • By squeezing the button latch (the latch facing inwardly),
  • Carefully align the filter with the Drop-In Lens Mount or Bezel Trim Ring.
  • Press the filter onto the iPhone camera and release the latch.
  • Ensure the filter is securely attached by gently checking the fit

The Moment VND 2–7 Stop QuickLock Filter makes it easy to stick to the 180° shutter rule. In simple terms, this rule means setting your shutter speed to double your frame rate to achieve natural motion blur.

For Example:

  • If your frame rate is 24 fps, set your shutter speed to 1/48 of a second
  • If your frame rate is 60 fps, set it to 1/120 of a second
  • If your frame rate is 120 fps, set it to 1/240 of a second

Some third-party apps, like the Blackmagic Camera app, let you choose between shutter speed and shutter angle. Shutter angle is an industry standard used in most cinema cameras. It allows you to set your shutter angle to 180°, which means you don’t have to keep adjusting your shutter speed every time you switch frame rates.
