The Google Pixel 9 Pro builds on the solid foundation laid by the Pixel 8 Pro, and very quickly became my favourite release. From the enhanced auto white balancing to the much faster 50MP processing — this device is an absolute powerhouse.

Improved Auto White Balancing

I chatted with Florian Koenigsberger, who’s been leading the Real Tone and Image Equity initiatives at Google. Florian’s efforts to ensure that Google’s cameras accurately represent all skin tones shine through in the new device. The new auto-white balancing isn’t just a minor tweak — it’s a significant upgrade. The camera now separates the subject from the background and adjusts the colours independently as you take the photo — resulting in more balanced, natural skin tones in any lighting situation. We can now get pictures that feel more true to life, which is a big win for those who prioritize accurate colour representation.

All of these photos are straight out of the camera. I tried to challenge it with my subject being backlit while it was extremely bright outside (see below!).

“Add Me” Feature

This feature was designed for group shots, allowing you to appear in the photo even if you were behind the camera. Honestly, I immediately thought to just have fun and be silly with it. The stitching is surprisingly good!

Final Thoughts

The Google Pixel 9 is a solid upgrade from the Pixel 8 Pro, refining what was already great. If you’ve been waiting to upgrade for a while — this might be the one!

I can’t wait to dive deeper into what this phone can do once my new Moment case arrives so I can adapt my favorite lenses and really take it to the next level.
